Multiple Principals

Sustainable Building Materials

Low-embodied-carbon and recycled-content building materials meeting IFC EDGE and LEED green building certification standards.

Construction accounts for 38% of global CO2 emissions, with cement alone responsible for 8%.

Africa’s construction boom is built predominantly with Portland cement, imported steel and virgin aggregate, the materials with the highest embodied carbon in the global construction palette. As IFC, World Bank and bilateral donors incorporate green building requirements into project financing conditions, demand for low-carbon alternatives is growing across East Africa. Jos•Hansen supplies certified sustainable building materials including compressed earth blocks, recycled-content aggregate, bamboo structural components and FSC-certified timber that reduce embodied carbon by 30-60% while meeting East African Standards specifications.

Sustainable Building Materials

30-60% lower carbon

Sustainable building materials reduce embodied carbon of building projects by 30-60% compared to conventional Portland cement and imported materials, qualifying projects for IFC EDGE, LEED and local green certification credits.

IFC EDGE certified

Material selections are documented against IFC EDGE and LEED MR credits, providing green procurement records for development finance environmental compliance and green building certification applications.

Local sourcing

Compressed earth blocks, bamboo and recycled aggregate are producible from locally available materials, reducing transport-embodied carbon, supporting local suppliers and strengthening supply chain resilience.

Compressed earth blocks replace fired brick with locally-sourced low-carbon masonry.

Recycled aggregate produced from demolition concrete, quarry waste and ceramic tile waste replaces 30-50% of virgin aggregate in non-structural concrete mixes at equivalent workability and compressive strength, reducing quarrying, crushing and transport energy. Every tonne used displaces a tonne of quarried material, reducing landscape impact and dust generation at quarry sites. Jos•Hansen sources recycled aggregate from certified recycling facilities, providing material test certificates confirming compliance with BS 8500 and East African Standards specifications.

Bamboo structural components offer the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any building material.

Bamboo culms achieve tensile strength of 100-400 MPa, comparable to mild steel, at 1/4 of the weight and with carbon sequestration during growth that makes it one of the few genuinely carbon-negative structural materials. Guadua and Moso bamboo engineered products including laminated bamboo boards, scrimber structural sections and treated round culms are used in structural frames, floor panels, roof systems and interior finishes. Jos•Hansen bamboo products are pressure-treated to INBAR borate treatment standards for durability in East African humidity conditions, with structural designs certified by qualified structural engineers.

Recycled aggregate reduces demand for quarried virgin stone in concrete.

Recycled aggregate produced from demolition concrete, clean quarry waste and ceramic tile waste replaces 30-50% of virgin aggregate in non-structural concrete mixes at equivalent workability and compressive strength, reducing the quarrying, crushing and transport energy embodied in conventional aggregate. Every tonne of recycled aggregate used displaces a tonne of quarried material, reducing landscape impact and dust generation at quarry sites. Why Sustainable.

Development finance compliant

Material documentation against IFC EDGE and LEED MR credits satisfies green building requirements of IFC, World Bank and bilateral development finance environmental conditions.

Local supply chain

CEB presses, bamboo and recycled aggregate use locally available inputs, reducing import dependence and supporting local material suppliers and processors.

Structural performance verified

All materials are certified to East African Standards or equivalent specifications, with structural designs certified by qualified engineers.

Carbon documentation included

Environmental product declarations and embodied carbon calculations are provided for each material, supporting project-level LCA and green building certification.
