Industrial facilities are required under national air quality legislation to limit and report stack emissions, but without continuous monitoring at stack outlets, facilities cannot demonstrate compliance and regulators cannot enforce it. Jos•Hansen designs and supplies continuous emissions monitoring systems measuring particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide at industrial stack outlets. Data is transmitted to the national environment agency data acquisition system, generating automated compliance reports required under industrial air emission licence conditions.

European EN 14181 QAL2 procedures require installed CEMS to be validated against certified reference method parallel measurements under actual operating conditions. Jos•Hansen manages the complete QAL2 certification process, coordinating reference method testing, data comparison and system adjustment to demonstrate equivalence within required uncertainty limits. Annual surveillance testing confirms ongoing QA compliance, generating the certification documentation required for regulatory submission.

Extractive and in-situ CEMS technologies suit different stack conditions.
Extractive CEMS systems draw a representative sample of stack gas through a heated sample line to conditioned gas analysers, providing high accuracy measurement of SO2, NOx and CO at low concentration ranges. In-situ cross-stack analysers including laser absorption spectroscopy and DOAS systems measure directly in the stack gas stream without sample extraction, eliminating sample line maintenance in high-moisture stack gases. Opacity and particulate CEMS using forward scatter or LIDAR technology measure PM in the stack without extracting samples. Jos•Hansen specifies the appropriate technology for each stack gas composition and temperature condition.

QAL2 certification ensures CEMS data meets regulatory validity requirements.
