Vaccine Cold Chain

Vaccine Cold Chain

Cold chain infrastructure that keeps vaccines viable from central storage to last-mile delivery.

A vaccine that has lost its cold chain is not a vaccine — it is a false sense of immunity.

An estimated 25% of vaccines used in Africa have been exposed to temperature excursions before administration — rendering them partially or completely ineffective while still appearing visually intact. The result is vaccinated animals that are not protected, failed immunisation campaigns and wasted public health investment. SureChill's phase-change technology, Evermed's insulated cold boxes and Berlinger Medical's temperature loggers address every point in the cold chain where failure most commonly occurs — from central storage through district level to the last-mile field vaccination team.

01

Central vaccine storage at 2–8°C without grid dependency.

SureChill refrigerators use phase-change material to store thermal energy during grid availability, then release it as controlled cooling for up to 35 days with zero electricity. This is not a backup cooler — it is the primary storage unit for national immunisation programmes in areas with unreliable power. Jos•Hansen supplies, installs and commissions SureChill units for government veterinary stores and district-level cold rooms across East Africa.

Last-mile vaccine transport in high-performance cold boxes.

The final distribution leg — from district store to field vaccination point — is where cold chain failures most commonly occur. Evermed cold boxes maintain 2–8°C for 72–120 hours without ice replenishment, are insulated to WHO/UNICEF standards and carry capacity from 5L field boxes to 46L campaign boxes. Jos•Hansen pre-qualifies cold box models with national regulatory authorities and trains vaccination teams in correct packing and ice pattern protocols.

Continuous temperature monitoring and compliance documentation.

Cold chain integrity requires documentation, not just equipment. Berlinger Medical USB temperature loggers provide a tamper-evident, time-stamped record of every shipment's temperature history — from central store to field delivery. Jos•Hansen integrates these loggers into every vaccine consignment it distributes, providing clients with the cold chain traceability documentation required by national regulatory authorities and international development partners.

Cold chain infrastructure built for African realities.

Unreliable power, rough roads, extreme ambient temperatures and remote last-mile locations are not exceptional conditions in Africa — they are normal. Our cold chain portfolio is engineered for all of them.

Power-independent primary cooling

SureChill's phase-change technology eliminates the single point of failure that conventional compressor refrigerators represent in areas with daily power outages — keeping vaccines viable through extended grid interruptions of up to 35 days.

WHO and UNICEF PIS compliance

Every cold box and refrigerator we supply has been pre-qualified against WHO/UNICEF performance, interoperability and safety specifications — ensuring compatibility with national immunisation programme procurement requirements.

Engineered for last-mile conditions

Evermed cold boxes are tested at 43°C ambient temperature and shock-tested for rough road transport — engineered specifically for the field delivery conditions of African livestock vaccination campaigns.

Real-time temperature excursion alerts

Berlinger Medical loggers transmit temperature excursion alerts where GSM connectivity is available — enabling programme supervisors to act before vaccines are compromised, not after delivery is already complete.

Cold chain performance in numbers.

Every product in our cold chain portfolio is validated against WHO/UNICEF standards — these are the performance benchmarks that define what that means in practice.
