Water Management Systems

Irrigation infrastructure and water efficiency solutions enabling year-round, climate-independent crop production.

Ninety-six percent of African agriculture depends on unpredictable rainfall.

Sub-Saharan Africa has 40% of the world's freshwater resources yet irrigates less than 5% of its agricultural land — leaving the production of virtually every African farming system entirely dependent on rainfall patterns that are becoming less predictable with each successive El Nino cycle. The result is boom-bust yield volatility that makes commercial farming investment difficult to finance and smallholder food security impossible to plan. Irrigation transforms farming economics: a single season of reliable water supply can convert subsistence production into commercial export-grade horticulture. Jos•Hansen supplies, designs and installs drip irrigation, sprinkler and pivot systems — matched to the water source, crop system and capital budget of each operation, from a 1ha smallholder plot to a 2,000ha commercial estate.

Drip irrigation delivers water to the root zone, halving consumption.

Surface and subsurface drip systems apply water at the plant root — eliminating evaporation losses that account for 30–50% of water use under flood and overhead sprinkler systems. Drip is now cost-competitive for smallholder vegetable production from 0.1ha upwards, with micro-drip kits available for solar-pumped or gravity-fed water sources. Jos•Hansen designs and installs drip systems from smallholder garden plots through commercial horticultural estates, with full post-installation support and maintenance programmes.

Centre pivot systems enable large-scale commercial production independence.

A centre pivot system converting 100ha of rain-fed land to fully irrigated production adds the equivalent of 2–3 additional growing seasons per year — transforming the financial model of commercial African farming. Jos•Hansen sources, supplies and commissions centre pivot and linear irrigation systems from leading global manufacturers, including civil engineering for borehole and pump infrastructure. Our agronomists develop crop water requirement schedules and irrigation programming for each commissioned system.

Water harvesting extends irrigation capacity from seasonal rain to dry season.

Many African farms have access to seasonal surface water or adequate rainfall — but lack the storage infrastructure to carry it through the dry season when water is most valuable. Our water harvesting programmes design catchment systems, storage reservoirs and distribution infrastructure matched to the water balance of each specific site. Jos•Hansen handles survey, design, civil works supervision and pump installation — converting seasonal rainfall into year-round irrigation capacity.

Cold chain infrastructure built for African realities.

Unreliable power, rough roads, extreme ambient temperatures and remote last-mile locations are not exceptional conditions in Africa — they are normal. Our cold chain portfolio is engineered for all of them.

Production Independence

Irrigated farms are insulated from the rainfall variability that drives the boom-bust yield cycles dominating African rain-fed agriculture — enabling reliable production planning and commercial contract farming.

Water Use Efficiency

Drip irrigation reduces water consumption by 40–50% versus flood or sprinkler methods while maintaining or improving crop yield and quality — critical where borehole or river abstraction is licensed or metered.

Multi-Season Revenue

Year-round irrigation access converts a single annual crop to 2–3 growing cycles — tripling revenue potential from the same land without additional area under cultivation.

Design-to-Maintenance Support

Jos•Hansen provides a complete project service from site survey and system design through procurement, installation and operator training — with ongoing maintenance support and spare parts supply.

Cold chain performance in numbers.

Every product in our cold chain portfolio is validated against WHO/UNICEF standards — these are the performance benchmarks that define what that means in practice.
