Soil & Environmental Testing
Field sampling equipment, environmental laboratory analysers and remediation technology for contamination assessment and land restoration.
Industrial, mining and agricultural contamination is silently degrading Africa's land and water.
Soil and groundwater contamination from industrial chemicals, heavy metals, agrochemicals and hydrocarbons is widespread across African industrial corridors, mining regions and peri-urban areas, yet the vast majority of contaminated sites have never been sampled, assessed or remediated. This invisible contamination enters food chains through crop uptake, pollutes groundwater that communities depend on for drinking water, and creates long-term public health liabilities that grow in cost with every year of inaction. Jos•Hansen supplies the field sampling equipment, environmental laboratory analysers and in-situ remediation technology needed to characterise, map and restore contaminated land and water resources to regulatory compliance standards.
Field sampling equipment collects representative environmental evidence.
Eijkelkamp and AMS soil coring systems, hand augers and split-spoon samplers collect soil samples from defined depths without cross-contamination between horizons, maintaining sample integrity for laboratory analysis. Groundwater sampling pumps collect representative water samples from defined aquifer zones for dissolved contaminant analysis. Jos•Hansen sampling programmes are designed to a data quality objective framework specifying sample locations, depths and handling protocols before fieldwork begins.
Portable XRF screening reduces investigation cost by 60-80%.
Portable X-ray fluorescence instruments analyse heavy metal concentrations in soil samples directly in the field in under 60 seconds per sample, enabling real-time contamination mapping without laboratory delay. XRF screening identifies hotspot zones requiring confirmatory laboratory analysis versus clean areas where screening data suffices, reducing expensive laboratory analyses by 60-80% versus grid sampling approaches. HORIBA and Olympus portable XRF instruments detect arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc and 20+ additional elements at sub-ppm detection limits.
Tissue processing
Automated dehydration, clearing and paraffin infiltration of biopsy specimens — replacing overnight manual processing with consistent, walk-away cycles.
Microtoming
Precision sectioning of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks to 3–5 micron thickness — the critical step for pathologist interpretation of cellular architecture.
Automated staining
Haematoxylin and eosin plus special stains applied under automated, reproducible conditions — eliminating staining variability that compromises diagnostic accuracy.
In-situ remediation treats contamination without costly excavation.
In-situ chemical oxidation, biostimulation, permeable reactive barriers and monitored natural attenuation treat soil and groundwater contamination without excavating and disposing of contaminated material. Jos•Hansen remediation programmes begin with a conceptual site model defining the source, pathway and receptor linkage for the specific scenario, selecting the most cost-effective approach for the site conditions and regulatory endpoint. Phytoremediation using metal-accumulating plant species is cost-effective for heavy metal contaminated soils at former mining and smelter sites.
More than analysers. A functioning laboratory.
Equipment alone does not make a laboratory work. Reagent supply, engineer support, accreditation documentation and staff competency all determine whether results are produced — and trusted.
Laboratory design and commissioning
We design and commission complete laboratory environments — from single benchtop analysers for district hospitals to multi-instrument automated lines for national referral facilities — including workflow planning and utilities specification.
HORIBA-certified field engineers
Our biomedical engineers are factory-trained by HORIBA Medical and Leica Biosystems. Preventive maintenance, calibration, corrective repairs and application support are delivered by certified personnel, not general-purpose technicians.
In-country reagent supply and cold chain
Jos•Hansen manages importation, customs clearance, storage and distribution of HORIBA, LKL and Leica reagents across East Africa — with temperature-controlled logistics for cold-chain products and local buffer stock to prevent stock-outs.
ISO 15189 accreditation support
We provide gap analysis, QMS documentation templates, equipment validation records and ongoing QC data review to support laboratories pursuing or maintaining ISO 15189 accreditation — the international standard for medical laboratory quality.
Performance you can measure.
Every analyser we supply is specified and validated against published performance data. These are the figures your laboratory manager and clinical governance team will hold the system to.
