Environmental Soil Sampling Equipment

Field coring, auger and sampling systems for contamination assessment, geotechnical investigation and environmental baseline surveys.

Most African contaminated sites have never been sampled, assessed or reported.

Environmental site assessment begins with collecting representative soil and groundwater samples from defined depths without cross-contamination between horizons: the quality of laboratory analysis is entirely dependent on the quality of the samples collected. Jos•Hansen supplies the Eijkelkamp and AMS Inc. range of environmental soil sampling equipment for contamination assessment, regulatory compliance sampling, geotechnical investigation and ecological baseline surveys. Every programme is designed to data quality objectives specifying sample locations, depths and handling protocols before fieldwork begins.

Environmental Soil Sampling Equipment

Undisturbed cores

Eijkelkamp and AMS liner-based auger systems collect undisturbed soil cores that preserve stratigraphy, moisture content and contamination distribution across depth intervals, critical for characterising contaminant migration pathways.

Decontamination

Stainless steel and PTFE sampling components are decontaminated between sampling points using isopropanol wipes and distilled water rinse to prevent cross-contamination between horizons and sampling locations.

Chain of custody

Sample collection forms, sample labels, custody seals and chain of custody documentation maintain sample integrity from field collection through laboratory analysis for regulatory and legal admissibility.

Liner-based sampling systems collect undisturbed representative cores.

Olympus Vanta and Bruker portable XRF instruments analyse soil samples directly in the field in 30-60 seconds, measuring arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc and 20+ heavy metals at 10-50 ppm detection limits. Field screening data guides real-time sampling decisions, directing laboratory analysis to hotspot zones identified by elevated XRF readings rather than committing to full-site grid sampling before any screening data is available. This approach reduces laboratory analysis costs by 60-80% on sites with heterogeneous contamination distribution.

Groundwater sampling equipment characterises aquifer contamination.

Eijkelkamp peristaltic pumps, submersible pumps and low-flow sampling equipment collect representative groundwater samples from monitoring wells at specific depth intervals within the aquifer, purging standing water before sampling to ensure the sample represents formation water rather than casing water. Low-flow sampling at 100-500 ml/min minimises turbidity and preserves volatile organic compound integrity in the sample, enabling accurate analysis of dissolved contaminants at sub-ppb concentrations. Disposable low-density polyethylene bailers are available for lower-cost standard purge-and-bail sampling where low-flow methods are not required.

Portable XRF enables field screening before laboratory confirmation.

Olympus Vanta and Bruker portable XRF instruments analyse soil samples directly in the field in 30-60 seconds, measuring arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury and 20+ additional heavy metals at concentrations above 10-50 ppm. Field screening data guides real-time sampling decisions, directing laboratory analysis to hotspot zones identified by high XRF readings. Field screening reduces total laboratory analysis costs by 60-80% on sites with heterogeneous contamination distribution by focusing laboratory expenditure on confirmed contaminated zones.

Why Environmental.

Data quality assurance

DQO-driven sampling design, decontamination protocols and chain of custody documentation produce investigation data accepted by NEMA and national environment agencies.

Real-time field decisions

Portable XRF field screening guides real-time sampling decisions, reducing investigation time and cost compared to laboratory-dependent sampling strategies.
